bulletin of the United States Fish Commission
Volume XXIII Parts 1 & 2 1903

Only 250 copies of the Bulletin were issued,

and are exceedingly scarce today.

This work probably represents the single most extensive

investigation of shallow aquatic resources

ever undertaken at the Hawaiian Islands.

Jordan and Evermann's Shore Fishes Volume

is a classic treatise on over 400 species (excluding Deep Water Fishes)

native to the Hawaiian Islands and vicinity.

Most copies had their beautiful chromolithographs removed

to be used as decoration, not science.

73 chromolithographs

Based on oil and watercolor paintings of living specimens

by Charles Hudson, A.H.Baldwin, and Kako Morita,

these beautiful paintings were almost always removed

from their original books to be used as decorative arts.

These 73 were collected over many years, from many sources,

and all are in fine condition.

Chromolithographs are produced by preparing

a separate stone, by hand, for each color to be used

and printing one color in precise register over another.

Intricate pictures can require as many as 30 stones

to complete a single print.

This was the most popular method of Color Reproduction until 1903

when Offset Printing was developed.
